10 ReasonsReasons To Work For Yourself

But before we go there, let’s just take the time to explore why you would want to do this. Here are the 10 top reasons that research shows why people generally choose to work for themselves.

1. You Can Choose to Work From Anywhere and Everywhere

AnywhereWorrying and planning what to wear that day for work becomes a thing of the past. I have a choice of polo shirts and shorts for work wear these days! One of the undoubted perks of working for oneself is being able to conduct business quite literally anywhere in the world. As long as you can access a computer and the internet you can work and there are precious few places these days, where that is not possible even if it means that you are tethering a mobile device to a satellite telephone (likely to be the exception rather than the rule LoL)

2. You can Choose to Do What You Enjoy Doing

If you are going to tread this path then it stands to reason that you will find something that you really want to do not something that you have to do driven by a need to pay the bills. Yes you still have to pay the bills but now you have fun while you work and if you follow the path which I can show you, then you can make money while you sleep.

3. You Can Create Meaningful Earning Opportunities For Others

Your own success will lead to a need to hire others to do those tasks that you no longer have time for. I worked as a freelancer for nearly 10 years before taking control and building my own opportunity necessitating given particular jobs to other for which I no longer have the capacity and which are not where my time is best invested.

4. You Can Earn Limited Only By ImaginationImagination

One of the very noticeable advantages of working for oneself is that one gets rewarded in direct proportion to one’s own investment and effort. Earning is not governed by a job grade or salary scale anymore.

5. You Can Sack the Boss – You are The Boss!

Good or bad; you decide, you are the Boss. Your workplace culture and your work life balance become governed by you not a Boss; you are the Boss!

6. You Will Develop Strong Personal Character

GrowthWorking for oneself is not ‘all beer and skittles’ it’s a gig that can create some considerable personal stress on occasions. There is no one to crack the whip on you, if you don’t do what is required you run the risk of destroying your opportunity, there is no pay cheque without you doing what’s needed that day.

Separating work from home life can be difficult to begin with and can be detrimental to both if not consciously balanced. Self-discipline, organisation, routine and maturity will come for those who take these things seriously probably quicker than they would as a directed employee .

7. You Will Develop Fortitude and Become a Stronger Being

There will be disappointment, there will be obstacles, there will be difficulties, there will be doubters and nay sayers. But if you have character and stickability, then you will weather all of this and become stronger and prove the doubters wrong. You will. Be able to take the world on in any week day and win!

8. You Get To Be True To Yourself

You will finally have the opportunity to both release and release your true creative and earning potential unhindered by the constraints of a position description or a transactional life.

9. You Will Develop Never Imagined SkillsetsSkills

You must become the complete master of your business environment. This will force you to do things you don’t like, that make you feel uncomfortable and often that you would not believe that you could do. You will become an expert in every facet of your business of cultivate those that you need to cover your gaps. You will experience unbelievable personal development of skills you would not have thought possible.

10. You Will Develop Your Own Remarkable Story

Your legacy will be your personal bravery, tenacity, adaptability, creativity and achievement, that form a personal legacy of worth that people will talk about; it will be your life’s adventure.

Besides as Beverly Sills said as long ago as 1929:

You may be disappointed if you fail, but you are doomed if you don’t try.

  1. Hi Hamish, I am so pleased to have come across this blog, as working for yourself certainly has far more to it than just being able to work from anywhere and firing the boss!

Yes it is great to be able to choose your own hours, but I love the “other” reasons that you have mentioned. The fact that you will develop a strong personal character and learn new skill sets, you get to be true to yourself and have to overcome obstacles, this is just great. It also means having to juggle more things, but it also allows you to have a better balance in life. Thanks for a great post.
